Skiing in Sweden offers a unique alternative to the Alps, with an excellent range of winter pursuits available throughout the country. The northerly location of Sweden makes for great snow conditions and the ski resorts are well-suited to families and skiing beginners. Sweden has a wonderful landscape, with scenic forests, crystal-clear lakes and fjords, and dense mountainous terrain which is home to some traditional ski resorts. Most of the ski areas are peaceful and relaxing, and the country offers a huge amount of cross-country trails.

Skiing In Sweden – The Resorts
The biggest and best- known resort in Sweden is Arefjallen. Situated by a beautiful lake, this sunny resort is attractive, full of character and has a large ski area, set against some stunning scenery. Are offers 100km of pistes, made up of 12 green, 42 blue, 35 red and 5 black runs spread over 5 separate villages, and the resort offers great intermediate terrain. The lift system in Are is extensive and efficient, with the 44 lifts having an uphill capacity of almost 50,000 and taking skiers up to the peak of 1,200m. There is a huge amount of off-piste available, and Are is home to some championship downhill runs. Snow-boarders are well catered for in Are with a well-equipped fun park.
The much smaller resort of Vemdalen is home to the countrys’ best ski school, and provides an excellent base for family ski holidays and beginners. Linked to Bjornrike and Klosjo, Vemdalen offers 58km of marked runs, both above and below the tree-line, and skiing up to 940m. Sitting on the Norwegian border, the delightful town of Storlien is the most charming and rustic of all the Swedish ski resorts, with its’ traditional wooden buildings and breathtaking scenery. There are 20 slopes in Storlien, a good mixture of greens, blues, reds and blacks, and 8 lifts to transport skiers around the area. Sweden is home to the most northerly resort in the world, the remote Riksgransen, which sits close to Lapland and the Norwegian border. Dating back 100 years, the small resort offers 21km of pistes, 9 lifts and a peak elevation of 910m. Riksgransen is known for its’ challenging skiing, and the resort also offers midnight skiing for 2 whole months during the spring.
Sweden Skiing – The Après-ski
Skiing in Sweden gives visitors the opportunity to sample the unique Scandinavian culture, and experience the laid-back and friendly nature of the people. The resorts in Sweden offer a more basic après-ski than other European counties, with the entertainment focused on the hotels, bars and cafes in the resorts, and live music and bands playing in the larger towns. Swedish food is simple but hearty, with restaurants serving such specialities as traditional smorgasbord, meatballs, reindeer and smoked fish. Sweden is an ideal all-round family destination, with English widely spoken, and there is a range of other activities to enjoy whilst skiing, including toboganning, snow-mobiling, sleigh rides, ice-climbing, ice-fishing and dog-sledding.
