Cervinia Skiing Holidays Cervinia, a purpose-built glacial resort, is a village located at the base of the Italian side of the Matterhorn, its’ high altitude making for superb snow conditions – the resort receives 394”annually. Cervinia is best suited to intermediate skiers, with the majority of the slopes being long, wide and fairly gentle, however Zermatt, with its’ more challenging terrain, is easily reached by lift. Cervinia is popular with many visitors as it offers fairly cheap Italian lodging, with the chance to ski the famed slopes of Switzerland.
Skiing in Cervinia – The Mountains The skiing in Cervinia covers an area of 135km, incorporating 54 trails, and the resort is situated at 2,050m, rising to a top elevation of 3,488m. The slopes of Cervinia are mainly south facing, meaning skiing in the warm Italian sun, and most of the skiing is above the tree-line. Beginners can choose from 28% of the runs, with the easy slopes located half-way up the mountain, so even first-timers can marvel at the breathtaking views. Intermediates have the most terrain here, with the long, wide red runs, ideal for cruising, making up 62% of the total. There are some satisfying long runs in Cervinia - from Plateau Rosa, where there are some spectacular views, take an 8km run leading directly to the village, or a 22km trail with a 1,500m vertical drop, which takes skiers down to Val Tournench. Experts should head for Zermatt, where the terrain is steeper and narrower, or enlist the help of a guide to show them the off-piste opportunities. Heli-skiing is also available in Cervinia, either through the trees or on the glacier. Although most of the lift system is fairly old, the resort is constantly updating them, with 6 and 12 person gondolas having been introduced, and the new innovative “ski bus on a rope” transporting almost 150 people to the to top of the mountain at one time. Cervinia is home to a snowpark, half-pipe and a boardercross, and regularly hosts events and competitions. Should the fabulous snow conditions in Cervinia fall short, there are 20 snowmaking machines on hand.
Skiing in Cervinia – The Après-ski Cervinia, with its’ 1960’s purpose-built accommodation, doesn’t have the authentic feel of many Italian resorts, but what it lacks in charm and authenticity, it makes up for with a friendly and easy-going atmosphere. The bars all have happy hours and are all within walking distance of each other, and Cervinia has 2 discos. There are 45 restaurants to choose from, 10 of which are on the mountains, all offering delicious Italian specialities, most in a casual, rustic setting.
